The Victorians really loved their pastiche gothic architecture. I love it too. I like to imagine the conversations that went on in architects’ practices at the time:
“I want to build something really fancy. With spires, and frilly bits.”
“Ok, but why?”
“Because I can.”
And lo – it came to pass.
